Our Fun Park Experience

Travel with a toddler! I never knew it would be so adventurous. I remember our first outing as a family to the park with hubby and my son one lovely evening. We were totally clueless that we were about to have an unknown adventure. We packed everything that we thought was of great importance.

This meant that half of the house went into the car (who knows, knows… and that’s all I’m going to say on this subject lol!). Firstly, we were new at this… secondly we were both in our early forties and this was our first and only child. Furthermore, we were learning as we went along.

We all had a great time and the sun started to set. By the time we packed up it was already dark and the lights in the park and streets were already lit.

Surprise, Surprise… It’s Number 2

On our trek back to the car, hubby put our son on his shoulders to sit on his neck and were happily trotted back to the car. Just as we approached our vehicle, we smelt it. As hubby took him off his shoulders… we saw it. Drumroll please!! Sonny boy had a poopie, there it was… all on his back. Furthermore, it was flooding down the back of his cute bunny rabbit shorts.

Oh! That wasn’t even the best part. In addition, it was running down the back of his daddy’s t-shirt as well. However, at the point in time it wasn’t as funny. After we got them all cleaned up and sat in the car, we had a good laugh about surviving the poop apocalypse and then we were on our way.

We Were Prepared… or Were We?

It just goes to say, that no matter how prepared we think we are, there are things that are just not in our control. Things happen and we just have to roll with it sometimes. So now we know we have to pack a little extra something for ourselves too just in case. So two years have gone by and we made a short trip not too long ago.

We didn’t think that it would be much of a big deal in terms of packing stuff for son-son and didn’t think we needed to carry much. Lesson learnt…or maybe ongoing lol! We didn’t carry the stroller because he’s a big boy now and its been stashed away somewhere in, behind or on top of a cupboard.

Our Stormy Air Plane Ride

First there was the excitement of going on the airplane (I’m thinking this is gonna go well..). He cried for almost the entire flight… sometimes loudly and at times just silently with the tears streaming down his face, just inconsolable. We felt horrible and wished we could turn invisible, also we thought the other passengers were staring at us and judging us. He stopped crying when he realised the airplane had stopped (thank goodness it was a 30 minute flight!).

Our Toddler Has a Meltdown

Then as soon as we got off the plane and started walking, “Mama…I’m tired” and does not want to walk another step. Frustration starts to build a little because we were carrying all the luggage for the trip in our backpacks and in hand. We didn’t arrange for a car because the hotel was a short walking distance away(or so we thought…). We ended up renting a car at the airport and spending way more money than we budgeted for.

Thinking we can still do things the way we did before having children is oh so different from when we have those additional pairs of tiny feet and little pleading eyes looking at us and seeing the signs that the tears before the meltdown is coming.

The Magic of Travelling to a Foreign Country

So here are a few tips and tricks we picked up along the way. These tips helped us experience a smoother journey when planning a trip with our toddler. Traveling internationally with a four-year-old toddler is a unique, beautiful sweet spot. At this stage, they are likely potty-trained, intensely curious about the world, and physically capable of walking short distances without constant carrying.

The plus side is we all get to witness the magic of foreign cultures, new languages, and historic sights with wide-eyed wonder.

The Transit Became Stressful

However, the adversity of the adventures of international travel can hit hard. Long-haul transit, disruptive time-zone shifts, and sudden routine changes are the perfect recipe for exhausting, public meltdowns. Our toddler thrives on predictability, and when we removed that safety net, travel quickly became stressful. Son-son did not understand why they he didn’t have his nice comfy bed and blankie or why his enormous green Mama Dino stuffy couldn’t take a trip too.

He was out of his comfort zone and was not at all in the mood for an unknown adventure of any kind; much less a trip overseas.

So to ensure a smooth, memorable journey, the packing strategy needs to focus on three core principles: compact comfort, stealth entertainment, and sanity preservation.    • The Issue: International airports feature miles of walking, and historic destinations often have endless cobblestone streets. A tired toddler refuses to walk, leaving you to carry a heavy child alongside your luggage.
   • The Solution: A lightweight stroller that collapses small enough to fit directly into an airplane’s overhead compartment. This avoids the damage risks of gate-checking and ensures you have an immediate napping station on the move.
2. Favourite Snuggly Layers (Pajamas & Warm Outerwear)
   • The Issue: Airplane cabins fluctuate wildly in temperature.  Most of our flights were night flights and felt cold and uncomfortable. This prevented our toddler from settling down to sleep.
   • The Solution: We packed his absolute favorite, broken-in pajamas and a cozy jacket. Familiar fabrics bring the comforting scent of home into a foreign environment, signaling to his brain that it was safe to sleep.
3. Overnight Pull-Ups
   • The Issue: Even as a fully potty-trained 4-year-old son-son’s experience was a bit traumatic. He didn’t like having to sit in the same place for such a long time.  Unfortunately the little bouts of turbulence on the plane had him feeling afraid. 
   • The Solution: we added an additional protective layer. We put him in high-absorbency nighttime training pants just for the duration of the long-haul flight and it brought a  much needed peace of mind and comfort for both myself and his daddy.

4. Volume-Limiting Kids Headphones
   • The Issue: Aircraft engines are loud, loud environment usually prompts our toddler to turn his tablet volumes up to dangerous levels which can become ear-damaging. Standard adult headphones are too large and uncomfortable and tend to slide off his small head.
   • The Solution: Child-specific over-ear headphones featuring a hard internal volume cap of 85 decibels (dB) to protect toddlers developing ears while isolating cabin noise.
