Comfortable Stretch Jeans: Finding My Perfect Pair

“It’s safe to say, some love stories last forever. Whilst others end with a tiny hole that somehow turns into an irreparable disaster.”

My comfortable stretch jeans; for years, that one faithful pair of blue jeans had been reached for without a second thought. On multiple occasions they had been worn on school runs, grocery trips, not to mention weekend adventures, family vacations, coffee dates and playground visits. Moreover those “I’ll just pop into the store for one thing” errands that somehow turned into a full afternoon.

My favourite blue jeans finally gave up, interestingly finding their replacement has become my new full time job. Unfortunately, I know it was bound to happen eventually.

Through had stretched exactly where they needed to, the way memory foam accommodates your body like a soft hug. This piece of perfection moved comfortably through every busy day, not to mention it never once complained. Sadly, after years of loyal service, the fabric had finally surrendered.

One tiny worn spot had become a tear. I addition to which my lovely thick thighs were rubbing the fabric on the inner seams into non existence. One tear had become several. Before long, it had become painfully obvious that retirement was no longer optional. A moment of silence was quietly observed.

Then the real challenge began.

Finding another pair.

Indeed buying a pair of jeans should be simple. Walk into a store. Pick a pair and go home happy.

In all honesty, what was experienced could only be described as an emotional roller coaster disguised as a shopping trip.

Some jeans refused to stretch. Others squeezed in places that had no business being squeezed. Furthermore, a few felt as though they had been designed by people who had never actually worn the jeans, let alone sat down while wearing them unfortunately.

And then, low and behold, there were those jeans. You know the ones. They looked amazing on the hanger. They looked promising in the fitting room.

Unfortunately, the moment a chair was approached… a simple sitting action became immediately regrettable.

On the other hand before pregnancy, jeans had been chosen almost entirely based on style.

Now? Comfort has become a lifestyle:

  • Jeans.
  • Shoes.
  • Sweaters.
  • Pajamas.
  • Underwear(don’t get me started with this one!)

If it pinches, digs in, or requires deep breathing just to fasten the button, it simply isn’t coming home with me.

My body has changed after having my baby and two surgeries on my tummy and that’s perfectly okay.

Some days, my hips feel a little wider. My waist isn’t quite where it used to be; actually I don’t believe I have a waist any more. As well as, I developed diastasis recti during my pregnancy. Secondly, I had huge fibroids that had grown significantly more during the nine months of pregnancy, which I believe also contributed to it.

I light of this, my clothes no longer fit the same post pregnancy. The rules have definitely changed. Yes, that being the case, it’s a topic that makes me feel emotional as I have never felt nor looked like this before. With this in mind nothing fits exactly as it did before.

In fact i didn’t know that I had diastasis recti until maybe two years ago. All I knew is that I would exercise and (try to) diet but I always had this bulge. This made me feel as though I was not making progress with my efforts and I usually quit. I realize now that consistency is the key.

Yes, I have started an exercise routine again and this time I am using YouTube for beginner videos that are specific to diastasis recti. I still look like I’m six months pregnant but I am learning to give myself grace. After all, my body didn’t become this way overnight. A little effort everyday adds up.

So, instead of trying to squeeze into an old version of myself, I have slowly learned that my wardrobe should fit me, not the other way around.

And honestly?

That realization has been wonderfully freeing.

If there is one hill I am willing to stand on, it is this: Stretch denim deserves every bit of the praise it gets. The right amount of stretch allows jeans to move with you instead of against you.

Whether chasing a toddler through the grocery store, bending to pick up toys for the hundredth time that day, or simply sitting comfortably with a cup of coffee, stretch denim makes everyday life so much easier.

  • No awkward stiffness.
  • Definitely no constant pulling.
  • Zero moments of silently counting down the minutes until sweatpants or yoga pants (which I absolutely love) can be put back on.

Just comfort.

Fashion has become wonderfully diverse, which means there’s truly a flattering style for every body. Here’s a list of different Jean styles. Who knew there were so many to choose from.

Summer calls for denim that’s just as comfortable. Some favorite styles include:

Stretch shorts have quickly become one of my summer essentials. To be honest I have already cut my favourite comfy long pair. Transforming it to a short pair which is currently being worn at home with a tank top. It was the obvious thing to do…I just could’t let it go; there was still some life left in it so why not!

Knowing your measurements can make shopping much easier whether it’s online or in your favourite department store.

You’ll need a soft measuring tape and a mirror.

Of course, be sure to remember a pen and notebook to write all your measurements.

  • Waist: Measure around the narrowest part of your waist without pulling the tape too tightly.
  • Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips and bottom while standing naturally.
  • Inseam: Measure from the inside of your leg down to your ankle.
  • Rise: Measure from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband on a pair of jeans that fits well.

Always compare your measurements with the brand’s size chart, since sizing can vary considerably between manufacturers. So don’t take for granted that one size in one brand will fit the same as the same size in another brand. Sometimes you may need to go up a size or go down a size.

Different brands and manufacturers use various types of denim and they may differ in colour, stretch, thickness and feel. All these factors contribute to your fit and level of comfort. So take your time before you make a choice and make your final purchase because they are an asset and will be with you for awhile.

Some helpful information to consider before clicking “Add to Cart,” and making a commitment:

  • Comfortable waistband
  • Soft denim fabric
  • Stretch percentage that suits your preference
  • Reinforced stitching
  • Functional pockets
  • High-quality zipper
  • Shape retention after washing (read your labels carefully)
  • Color that complements your wardrobe
  • Flattering rise
  • Appropriate length
  • Easy movement when sitting, bending, and walking
  • Fabric weight suited to your climate

Remember, the “perfect” pair isn’t always the trendiest—it is the pair that makes you feel confident and comfortable. The worse feeling to have is an uncomfortable pair of jeans that you can’t get out of. Maybe you are in the middle of picking up the kids from school or enduring a long drive home stuck in traffic after a grocery or shopping trip.

It makes you agitated and that saying of “no pain no gain” takes your experience to another level of frustration. I my humble opinion; it is simply not worth putting yourself through that type of unnecessary stress.

A little extra care can help your favorite pair last for years. Here are some tips to take care of them.

Although my faithful blue jeans have officially retired (somewhat), something valuable has been learned along the way.

Finding the “perfect” pair isn’t about chasing the latest trend or squeezing into the size you wore years ago. I can say this because I am totally guilty of going through my wardrobe and trying to fit into pieces that just can’t. It’s about choosing clothing that fits your life today. Our bodies change. Styles evolve. Priorities shift.

After becoming a mom, comfort stopped feeling like a compromise and started feeling like confidence. So yes, the search for a new favorite pair continues. Hopefully, another pair of soft, stretchy blue jeans is waiting somewhere on a store shelf—or in an online shopping cart—ready to become the next wardrobe hero.

Until then, if you happen to see someone in the denim aisle gently stretching every pair of jeans before trying them on…There’s a good chance it’s me.

Happy shopping!
