Halloween at Home

Halloween at home is the absolute best. It’s just around the corner, and honestly, you don’t need to leave the house to have a great time. I certainly don’t plan to!

Some of my favorite Halloween memories happen at home. We decorate the house, dress up, play music, and fill the table with snacks. Of course, someone usually screams when a fake spider appears where it shouldn’t!

Whether you’re planning a family Halloween, inviting a few friends over, or simply making October 31 more exciting, you can turn your home into a fun Halloween headquarters with a few simple touches.

And the best part?

You don’t have to spend a fortune.

For example; a few well-placed decorations transforms your home. These are some suggestions, click the links to view products:

Give your front door some extra attention. Hang a spooky wreath, a ghost, or an oversized Halloween bow. These simple touches can make a big impact.

Want a more modern look? Try black-and-white decor. Add moody lighting, pumpkins, and subtle gothic details. You can create a stylish Halloween display without covering everything in bright orange plastic.

Indoor Halloween decorating can be just as much fun. Try some of these ideas, click the links to view products:

Flame-less floating candles are particularly fun for creating a spooky atmosphere without an actual flame, while bat wall stickers and garlands can transform a plain wall or hallway very quickly.

And if you have children, decorations that can be reused every year are worth considering. Nobody needs a giant Halloween shopping bill followed by the discovery that everything has to be thrown away on November 1.

Who says costumes are only for trick-or-treating? Get everyone involved. Click the links to view some cute family costume ideas:

For 2026, plenty of fun costume ideas are trending. Think dreamy witches, fortune tellers, classic ghosts, bats, pumpkins, black cats, storybook characters, and playful group costumes.

A full costume can also feel like too much work. Keep it simple instead. Try a Halloween T-shirt, sweatshirt, spooky pajamas, cat ears, or a cute witch hat. You can still get into the Halloween spirit without going all out.

Ladies, Halloween gives you another excuse to have fun with your nails! I tried press-on for a Christmas Dinner last year and I did not regret it at all. I can’t handle the acrylics; they can cost a lot and I usually feel uncomfortable with them on. I’m always doing something or the other and I move slower with them on. Maybe I will give them a second chance one day. For now I will stick with regular nail polish and the press-on. Here are some pros of choosing press-on:

  • Don’t want to spend a fortune on acrylics? Try press-on nails instead.
  • Press-ons come in so many shapes, colors, and designs.
  • You can find spooky pumpkins, ghosts, bats, glitter, and Halloween-inspired patterns.
  • They are also affordable and easy to apply.
  • No salon appointment needed.
  • Put them on at home and go!
  • You might even get a few compliments and feel extra fabulous for trying something new.

Choose comfortable costumes for children. Kids want to run, play, eat treats, and have fun. A costume that feels too tight, hot, or itchy can ruin the night.

Because there is nothing festive about hearing: “ Mama this costume is itchy!” while a pair of sad eyes looks back at you.

Let the kids enjoy themselves. Choose comfort whenever possible.

After all, Halloween should feel fun, not frustrating.

You don’t need to be a professional baker to create Halloween-themed food. Sometimes a little food colour can do the trick.

I honestly just do normal food and arrange them nicely on the table with some spiders (or whatever decorations I have to suit the occasion) and varying sized pumpkins on the table. I add a few battery operated candles or some amber string lights under a sheer table cloth (I used a curtain and guess what…nobody suspected a thing, it saved me going to buy material at the store plus I just continued using the curtain afterwards after a wash).

I try not to stress about it because most times the kids eat the same things like nuggets and fries, pizza or sandwiches. Kids just want to play and have fun anyway. I usually do wings for my adults because they are super simple to make and everyone loves wings. Just season and throw them in a couple of sheet pans and you are good to go. Then just have one or two sauces like a BBQ sauce and honey mustard. Potato and pasta salad is easy and I usually do them the day before and leave them to marinate. I think they taste better and it’s one less thing I need to do on the actual day.

Add Halloween-themed plates, napkins, serving trays and cups to make the table look festive without requiring a complicated menu. The plus side is you get to dump everything afterwards; cause nobody is going to do the dishes after all this fun.

Once everyone has eaten enough sugar to potentially power a small vehicle, it is time for some games. Here’s three easy activities everyone will love:

  1. Halloween Scavenger Hunt

Hide Halloween-themed objects around the house and give everyone a list of things to find.

2. Halloween Charades

Act out Halloween characters, movies, animals and spooky objects.

3. Pumpkin Decorating Contest

Give everyone a small pumpkin and let creativity take over.

You can use paint, stickers and craft supplies instead of carving, especially with younger children and adults like myself who’s afraid of cutting my hands because pumpkins can be tricky.

Here are some categories you can have. It’s all good fun. The winner could get to smash a pumpkin or get a bag of candy as a prize. It’s all good fun.

  • Funniest costume
  • Cutest costume
  • Most creative
  • Scariest
  • Best family costume
  • Best DIY costume

Once the games are finished, the costumes are slightly crooked and everyone has consumed approximately 900 pieces of candy, it is time to relax. The evening is winding down. It’s time to take off the lights because it’s Movie Time! Here are some of our family favorites. (I haven’t seen this Charlie Brown as yet but I don’t feel like it’s Christmas without him, so I trust this one is good too!)

Although somehow we always end up watching one of the Hotel Transylvania movies. Also don’t forget to create a cozy Halloween movie corner with:

  • Blankets
  • Halloween pillows
  • Popcorn
  • Hot chocolate
  • Halloween pajamas
  • String lights
  • Flame-less candles

Choose a family-friendly Halloween movie and make the living room your own little movie theater. This is usually when the smaller kids tend to fall asleep.

For adults, a scarier movie can always be saved for later.

Because apparently parents are allowed to enjoy Halloween too.
