Summer is ending, but the memories don’t have to. Squeezing every bit of enjoyment out of the last warm, enjoyable, days of summer is a must. Here is a list of fun budget friendly activities to do as a family before the weight of the everyday routines begin.
There always seems to be a moment when it suddenly hits me. Summer is almost over.

One minute, there are long sunny days, beach bags by the door, children asking for snacks every twelve minutes. Occasionally, no one says, ‘I’m bored,’ which marks a blissful moment.
Then, shop owners fill the stores with back-to-school supplies.
Again.
Apparently, summer didn’t even have the decency to give me a proper warning before beginning its grand exit. This year, we decided the remaining days of summer would not vanish into chores like laundry, errands, and grocery shopping.
We were going to make more memories. We were going to visit the beach. Someone was going to conquer the playground. We were going to grill the food. We were going to admire the stars.
Somewhere between all the parenting responsibilities, we would find a little time for ourselves as a couple. As much as we love family time, we should also give relationships a little attention.

Making the Most of the Last Days of Summer as a Family
Before the season changes and routines take over again, there are still plenty of simple ways to enjoy the warm weather without spending a fortune.
The best part is that some of the most memorable family activities do not require complicated planning at all.
Sometimes, all that is needed is a cooler, a few snacks, comfortable clothes, and the willingness to leave the house before someone decides the sofa is the only place worth being.
1. Have One More Family Beach Day
If there is still time for one more beach trip, I plan to take it before summer ends.
There is something about the combination of sunshine, salty air, sand between everyone’s toes, and children running toward the water as though they have just been released from captivity that makes a beach day feel like summer at its best.
Summer Beach Packing Essentials:
- Beach towels
- Sunscreen
- Reusable water bottles
- Healthy snacks
- A cooler
- Beach chairs
- A beach umbrella or pop-up tent
- Sand toys
- A waterproof phone pouch
- Extra clothes for the children
- A good book – for the person who somehow manages to get five uninterrupted minutes. (I wonder who that may be…)
A beach day doesn’t need to be expensive. Pack a picnic basket with some simple chicken or tuna salad in rolls or buns or some bagels if you want to be all fancy. Some adults will also, I mean who doesn’t like a good hot dog and they are always a hit with the kids. For me fresh chilled fruit is a must and is a hit with both adults and kids alike. Bring along your own drinks, juice boxes for kids and maybe try a home made cocktail blend with some pineapple juice, coconut rum and some bitters. Throw in some fresh mint leaves and a few pieces of crushed pineapples and pour it in a travel mug. Enjoy over some ice and sip responsibly. Enjoy the simple pleasure of spending the day together with the family in a budget friendly way.

2. Visit a Lake or Nature Spot this Summer
If you cannot arrange a beach trip, a lake, river, nature reserve, or scenic outdoor spot offers as much relaxation. You can arrange a family picnic, take a short walk, and let the children explore. Moreover, it is a great opportunity for the kids to see animals in their natural habitat.
We can give the kids cameras to make memories. Afterwards they can do a collage or a scrapbook because if the family outing isn’t documented, was everyone really there?
Activities can include:
- Picnicking
- Nature walks
- Skipping stones
- Bird watching
- Taking family photos
- Playing outdoor games
- Having a scavenger hunt
Not every summer memory has to be extravagant. Sometimes, slowing down together is enough.

3. Summer: A Great Time to Take the Kids to the Playground
A playground trip may sound simple, but children can turn an ordinary playground into a full-scale adventure.
There are slides to conquer. Swings to fly from. Monkey bars to attempt.
The kids will eventually recruit a parent to participate in something their knees have politely informed them they no longer want to do.
Still, fresh air, movement, and laughter make this one of the easiest budget-friendly summer activities for families.
A trip to the local pizzeria afterwards will quell all the thirst and hunger pangs after a day full of these playground activities.

4. Plan a Family Trip to the Zoo
A simple zoo day can be a fun way to end the summer, especially for families with younger children. My son absolutely loves a trip to the zoo. He used to be afraid of the animals but I realize as he’s grown older he seems to be less afraid. I was surprised to see him excited to touch a rabbit and a duck during one of our visits.
The day can be turned into a learning adventure by encouraging children to:
- Learn the names of new animals.
- Take pictures of their favorites.
- Talk about animal habitats.
- Bring a small notebook to draw what they see.
- Choose their favorite animal of the day.
A packed lunch and reusable water bottles can also help keep the cost down.
Not to mention, after watching a toddler try to imitate every animal they see, free entertainment will probably be included.

5. It’s Summer! Host a Backyard Barbecue Potluck
This could be one of my favorite ideas because one person does not have to handle all the cooking. We should celebrate that. It always beats one person spending the day in the kitchen preparing everything. The plan lets everyone unwind and savor the evening together.
Instead of preparing every dish yourself, invite family and friends and ask everyone to bring something.
Some suggestions persons can bring:
- Salad (pasta or potato)
- A simple lettuce, tomato, cucumber, pepper salad
- Pasta
- Grilled chicken
- grilled veggie (we can try to be healthy)
- Burgers
- Rice
- Fresh fruit
- Desserts
- Drinks
- Snacks
- More ice than you think you need
A simple backyard barbecue can quickly become a summer tradition.
Music can be played, children can run around, lawn games can be set up, and everyone can enjoy a meal together without the pressure of one person having to prepare an entire feast.
The best kind of family gathering is often the one where the food is shared and the cleanup is also mysteriously shared. I tend to tie garbage bags on the outskirts of the activity area so everyone can just dump the disposables after having their meal or snacks. Yes, there will still be some cups hanging around the backyard afterwards but the clean-up will be minimal at least.
That is the dream.

6. Try Backyard Camping or Go Stargazing
For families who are not quite ready to commit to actual camping, backyard camping is the perfect compromise. You can set up a tent and bring blankets outside.
Of course you can’t forget the snacks. These somehow end up being the most important part of the evening.
And, most importantly, the house is only a few steps away if anyone suddenly remembers that they absolutely cannot sleep without their favorite pillow or need a bathroom break.
The evening can be spent:
- Looking for stars
- Telling stories
- Playing flashlight games
- Making s’mores
- Listening to nighttime sounds
- Watching for shooting stars
- Using a beginner-friendly star map or stargazing app
If a local stargazing event is available in your area, it could also become a special family outing. Additionally, make the event more magical by putting up string lights around the tent or backyard. I’m a total sucker for party lights or string lights. I mean, why not…lights make everything better, plus they can be switched on and off for spooky stories and stargazing.

7. Go for a Family Run or Evening Walk
You don’t need to plan every activity. Sometimes, an evening walk can be exactly what the family needs. We put away our phones for a while, enjoy the fresh air, and simply talk.
A family walk or light run can encourage movement while also creating an opportunity to connect. Children can point out things they notice.
Parents can catch up.
And, somehow, the simplest moments can become the ones that are remembered most.
The summer memories we make are for a lifetime.
Time spent together as a family is important because it helps create connection, security, and lasting memories. In the middle of busy schedules, school, work, chores, and everyday responsibilities, family time gives everyone a chance to slow down and simply enjoy one another.

Why family time matters
Additionally, it improves communication. Time together creates opportunities to talk, listen, and learn more about what is happening in each other’s lives.
It teaches important values. Through everyday activities, children can learn kindness, teamwork, patience, respect, and the importance of supporting one another.
It reduces stress and brings joy. A simple walk, game night, picnic, or backyard barbecue can provide a welcome break from everyday routines.
It strengthens relationships between siblings. Shared adventures and activities can help create bonds that may last well into adulthood.
It encourages children to be present. Family activities can offer a chance to step away from screens and enjoy real conversations and experiences together.
It creates traditions. Small traditions—such as an end-of-summer beach trip or a monthly family barbecue—can become some of the most meaningful parts of family life.
Ultimately, family time doesn’t have to be expensive or perfectly planned to be meaningful. Sometimes, the best moments are created during a simple evening walk, a shared meal, a trip to the playground, or a night spent laughing together in the backyard.
The real gift of spending time together is not just the activity itself—it’s the feeling of belonging that comes from knowing, “These are my people, and we are making memories together.”
