Store shelves are quietly transformed. Bright swimsuits are replaced with neatly stacked notebooks. In addition, sandals slowly make way for sneakers. In like manner, lunch bags suddenly appear where beach towels once were. And just like that… Back-to-school season has officially arrived. As a matter of fact, it has often been said that one of the biggest signs summer is winding down isn’t the weather—it’s the sight of parents wandering the school supply aisles, coffee in one hand together with shopping lists in the other, wondering how so many tiny humans could possibly need so many supplies.

Needless to say in light of this, the shopping carts filled much faster than expected. Moreover, there were quite a lot of “No!”, “Put that back where you got it”, and “Maybe we can get that next time sweetheart”. Not to mention, these were followed by; “But why?”, “But I really love it!”, and of course a million other variations of why they should have whatever they were trying to sneak into the trolleys.

Three Children. Three Personalities. Three Very Different Opinions.

As a matter of fact, it quickly became obvious that every child approaches backpack shopping a little differently.

My toddler was completely convinced that every backpack should be tested by wearing it around the store at full speed. For him, it was a toss-up between his beloved dinosaur or a Spidey print. As it turns out I couldn’t decide and not only did I buy the Spidey bag but the dinosaur as well. I know …this was not good for my budget at all.

Then my three-year-old niece seemed determined to open every zipper she could find—purely for quality assurance, of course.

Meanwhile, my eight-year-old niece had already developed a detailed checklist that included colors, sparkle level, matching lunch bag with water bottle pocket, as well as, whether it would impress her classmates.

Apparently, practical features were only considered after the glitter test had been passed.

Once the backpacks and lunch bags had been chosen, the real checklist began. My niece got some pink unicorn stationery with colourful pens as a bonus, in light of trying to keep the little ones occupied with little fun games on our trip. At this point they were ready to climb into the trolleys because they were becoming hungry and tired. As a matter of fact, this is were the dynamic trio snuck in some extras because everything blended really well in the trolleys. To be honest, at the same time, the little hands didn’t do too badly because they picked up extra coloured pencils, as well as crayons, storybooks and colouring books.

Several snack breaks had been required. And an equivalent amount of bathroom breaks to match as well. At least one backpack fashion show had been performed by all three models in the store.

And despite the long lines, busy stores, and endless decisions, another memory had quietly been made. As the children bonded, I also felt that the shared experience brought me closer to my sister since we don’t always see each other as often as we would like.

Summer may eventually fade into homework, lunch boxes, alarm clocks, and busy school mornings, but these little traditions have a way of becoming some of the moments that are remembered most. Perhaps back-to-school shopping isn’t just about preparing children for another school year.

Possibly it’s also about celebrating how much they’ve grown—and quietly wondering how they managed to outgrow last year’s backpack so quickly. Because before long, another summer will arrive, another back-to-school shopping list will be written, and another adventure will be waiting in the school supply aisle.
