Summer Memories by the Sea: Our Family Beach Day Guide

There’s something magical about summer.

Making summer memories by the sea is close to perfection with our family beach day guide. Hanging out with our friends and family, enjoying the longer days, warm sunshine, laughter echoing through the air, and the excitement of spending quality time with the people you love create memories that last a lifetime. For our family, nothing says summer quite like a beach get-together filled with good food, sandy toes, and endless laughter. All put together in a nearly seamless fashion with our beach day guide.

Last weekend, we packed the car before sunrise, loaded our beach chairs, cooler, umbrellas, and snacks, and headed to the coast to meet up with grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends. It was a nice mix of people since we had a few childhood friends and some were co-workers that we met in the recent years.

The kids could barely contain their excitement to the beach, asking every five minutes, “Are we there yet?” and “It’s so far”. We also had two of my nieces in the car as well since they were having a week-long play date with son-son at our home. The three of them together meant that there was a full circus and a zoo combined with all the noise and shenanigans. As soon as we arrived, everyone found their favourite spot. The children rushed straight to the shoreline to build sandcastles while the adults set up the picnic area. (what’s the deal with kids and sandcastles…they are super obsessed with them).

Music played softly in the background, beach games were scattered across the sand, and before long, the smell of grilled burgers fries and fresh fruit filled the beachy ocean air. Watching everyone together reminded me that summer isn’t about expensive vacations—it’s about creating unforgettable moments with the people who matter most.

After a few summers of learning the hard way, we’ve discovered that a little planning makes all the difference. (We pack and then we packed a little extra just in case lol!) Our beach essentials included:

  • A lot of towels
  • Plenty of bottled water
  • Fresh fruit and snacks for the adults and kids
  • A large beach umbrella for shade
  • A waterproof Bluetooth speaker
  • Sand toys and buckets
  • Beach games like paddle ball, frisbee
  • Insulated cooler to keep fruit and drinks cool
  • First-aid kit
  • Quick-dry towels
  • Extra swimsuits

Keeping everyone hydrated throughout the day was our number one priority. Furthermore the frozen grapes, watermelon slices and oranges were so refreshing that they became instant favorites for breaks between swimming and building sandcastles.

One of my favorite parts of family outings is coordinating everyone’s outfits—not matching exactly, but choosing complementary colors that look beautiful in photos. I absolutely love taking photos and short videos to remember all the fun moments of the day. Side note; I plan to do an online course in photography some time in the future.

This year’s summer fashion trends are all about comfort, breathable fabrics, and effortless style.

Think relaxed elegance. I usually go for some shorts and a nice oversized shirt for a relaxed feel. After splashing in the waves with the kids I usually change into a comfy maxi dress. Some of my all time favorites include:

Some cool trendy summer colors I usually go for are sky blue, soft coral, sage green, white (which is always my default), sand beige and butter yellow.

To keep dad looking handsome and comfortable his usual picks are as follows:

Neutral colors paired with navy or tropical prints always look stunning in photos and as that beachy vibes that easily blends well with the rest of the family.

I dressed the kids in clothing that’s lightweight, breathable, and easy to move in. Here’s my go to list. I also packed some cute summer dresses for my nieces to wear. They are such girly girls; they absolutely love dresses especially if they come in pink and purple. The bright colours made it much easier to spot them on the busy beach.

These are some of the necessities I packed for them:

If there’s one lesson we’ve learned as parents, it’s that sun protection is just as important as packing snacks. Children’s skin is much more sensitive than adults’, and even a short amount of time in direct sunlight can result in painful sunburn. Don’t forget to get some for yourself too, I tend to turn crispy pretty quickly when I’m out, needless to say it’s a definite necessity on hot summer days.

Our family routine includes:

  • Applying sunscreen 20–30 minutes before arriving.
  • Reapplying every two hours.
  • Reapplying immediately after swimming.
  • Wearing hats and UV-protective clothing.
  • Taking shade breaks throughout the day.

When shopping for sunscreen, we look for formulas that are:

  • Mineral-based (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide)
  • Fragrance-free
  • Reef-friendly
  • Water-resistant
  • Pediatrician-tested
  • Suitable for sensitive skin

These types of sunscreens are often a great choice for the whole family because they sit on the skin rather than being absorbed.

  • [ FACE SUNSCREEN & BODY SUNSCREEN WITH SPF 30 ] CeraVe sunblock helps protect your skin against harmful UVA and UVB rays…

Summer evenings are beautiful—but mosquitoes can quickly become unwanted guests.

We’ve started using plant-based insect repellents that are formulated for children and families. Similar to many parents we prefer products made with naturally derived active ingredients and free from harsh chemicals.

When we are choosing an insect repellent, we look for options that are:

  • Suitable for sos-son’s age (always follow the label instructions).
  • Free from unnecessary dyes and strong fragrances.
  • Dermatologist-tested for sensitive skin.
  • Easy to apply as a spray or lotion.

No matter which product we may choose, we always follow the manufacturer’s directions for safe use, especially since young children are involved.

  • DEET-Free* & Powered By Essential Oils – Active ingredients derived from plants *Not a safety claim.
  • Instant & Convenient – 25 individually-wrapped bracelets help keep mosquitoes away

One thing I love about beach days is that there’s truly something for everyone.

Some of our family’s favorite activities include:

  • Sandcastle competitions
  • Beach volleyball
  • Seashell collecting
  • Paddle ball
  • Flying kites
  • Frisbee
  • Nature walks
  • Family photo sessions
  • Sunset walks
  • Beach scavenger hunts
  • Floating in the waves
  • Reading under an umbrella
  • Card games
  • Picnic lunches

The children especially loved burying Dad’s feet in the sand and decorating them into “sand monsters.”

Beach food doesn’t have to be complicated.

Some of our easy favorites include:

  • Watermelon
  • Pineapple
  • Grapes
  • Cheese cubes
  • Trail mix
  • Turkey wraps
  • Pasta/ Potato salad (I add shredded rotisserie chicken in my pasta sometimes and it’s delicious!)
  • Granola bars
  • Veggie sticks
  • Yogurt pouches
  • Hotdogs
  • Frozen juice boxes

Additionally, keeping snacks and food items simple means easy distribution. Be sure to carry disposable cutlery and a garbage bag for quick clean up. Leaving more time to enjoy the day.

As we packed up to head home, tired but smiling, I watched the kids asleep in the back seat with sandy feet and sun-kissed cheeks. Those quiet moments reminded me that the best part of summer isn’t the destination—it’s the time spent together.

The laughter, the shared meals, the silly games, and the joy of unplugging from our busy schedules create memories our children will carry with them for years to come.

Whether you’re planning a quick beach trip, a family picnic, or a weekend getaway, don’t forget to pack the essentials, dress comfortably, protect your family from the sun and bugs, and most importantly—be present.

Summer has a way of slowing life down just enough for us to remember what truly matters.

Here’s to sunshine, family adventures, and making memories that last long after the season ends.
