The Ultimate Backpack and Lunch bag guide.
Back-to-school shopping; it creeps up just when it feels like summer has settled into its rhythm of late mornings, beach trips, popsicles, and endless outdoor adventures, the inevitable begins to happen. “Because apparently summer has only just begun… until someone whispers the words, ‘Back to School.'”

Store shelves are quietly transformed. Bright swimsuits are replaced with neatly stacked notebooks. Sandals slowly make way for sneakers. Lunch bags suddenly appear where beach towels once were. And just like that… Back-to-school season has officially arrived. It has often been said that one of the biggest signs summer is winding down isn’t the weather—it’s the sight of parents wandering the school supply aisles, coffee in one hand and shopping lists in the other, wondering how so many tiny humans could possibly need so many supplies.
Survival of the Fittest: The Quest for the Backpack – The Ultimate Guide
This year, the annual shopping adventure was made far more entertaining because it was shared with my sister. Together, we set out with one mission: Survive back-to-school shopping. Between us, there were three little shoppers to prepare for.
- My energetic toddler son who’s currently four and soon to be turning five.
- My niece, who had just turned three
- And my oldest niece, an excited eight-year-old who already knew exactly what was “cool” this year.
Needless to say…the shopping carts filled much faster than expected. There were quite a lot of “No!”, “Put that back where you got it”, and “Maybe we can get that next time sweetheart”. These were followed by; “But why?”, “But I really love it!”, and a million other variations of why they should have whatever they were trying to sneak into the trolleys..
Three Children. Three Personalities. Three Very Different Opinions.

It quickly became obvious that every child approaches backpack shopping a little differently.
My toddler was completely convinced that every backpack should be tested by wearing it around the store at full speed. For him, it was a toss-up between his beloved dinosaur or a Spidey print. As it turns out I couldn’t decide and ended up buying one of each. (I know …this was not good for my budget at all.)
My three-year-old niece seemed determined to open every zipper she could find—purely for quality assurance, of course.
Meanwhile, my eight-year-old niece had already developed a detailed checklist that included colors, sparkle level, matching lunch bag, water bottle pocket, and whether it would impress her classmates.
Apparently, practical features were only considered after the glitter test had been passed.
What Makes a Great Backpack? The Ultimate Back-to-School Guide

- Durable stitching
- Strong zippers that glide smoothly
- Reinforced bottom panel
- Multiple compartments for organization
- Side pockets for water bottles
- Easy-to-clean materials

Choosing the Perfect Back-to-School Lunch Bag
Lunch bags tend to receive much less attention than backpacks—but they work just as hard keeping all the kid’s munchies fresh until they need them.
I believe a quality lunch bag should include:
- Excellent insulation
- Leak-resistant interior
- Easy-to-clean lining
- Made from BPA-free materials
- Durable zipper (To endure the million times the kids open them)
- Comfortable carrying handle
- Room for ice packs
- Interior mesh pockets
- Exterior water bottle pocket(I find this to be extremely useful)
- Lightweight design
- Machine-washable or wipe-clean material
Keeping lunches fresh until lunchtime makes everyone’s day a little easier and I really believe insulation is a must have but it’s all up to your preference.

Back-to-School Essentials Worth Packing

Once the backpacks and lunch bags had been chosen, the real checklist began. My niece got some pink unicorn stationery with colourful pens as a bonus for trying to keep the little ones occupied with little fun games on our trip. At this point they were ready to climb into the trolleys because they were becoming hungry and tired. This is were the dynamic trio snuck in some extras because everything blended really well in the trolleys. To be honest the little hands didn’t do too badly because they picked up extra coloured pencils, crayons, storybooks and colouring books.
I allowed them because the kids felt that they were a part of the process and the items they picked up would keep them occupied at home or in the car anyways. Some of our favorite essentials included:
- Leak-proof water bottles
- Bento lunch containers
- Ice packs
- Name labels
- Reusable snack bags
- Crayons
- Washable markers
- Pencils
- Colored pencils (I love the tri-coloured ones and yes I got a box for myself too!)
- Pencil pouch
- Glue sticks
- Child-safe scissors
- Hand sanitizer
- Tissues
- Disinfectant wipes
- Extra change of clothes (especially for toddlers)
- Healthy snacks
- Small comfort toy for younger children
Somehow, every item felt absolutely essential by the time we reached the checkout line.
Back-to-School Shopping Tips
A little preparation can save both time and money, here are some helpful tips to make back-to-school shopping for the kids a little easier.
- Shop early before popular items sell out.
- Compare prices before purchasing.
- Check school supply lists carefully.
- Buy slightly larger backpacks to allow room for growth.
- Choose quality over the lowest price.
- Label everything before school starts.
- Let children help choose their supplies—it builds excitement for the new school year.
Sometimes Shopping Trips Become Family Traditions
By the time our shopping bags had been loaded into the car, a surprising amount of laughter had been shared. A few extra toys may have mysteriously found their way into the trolley.
Several snack breaks had been required. And an equivalent amount of bathroom breaks to match as well. At least one backpack fashion show had been performed by all three models in the store.
And despite the long lines, busy stores, and endless decisions, another memory had quietly been made. As the children bonded, I also felt that the shared experience brought me closer to my sister since we don’t always see each other as often as we would like.
Summer may eventually fade into homework, lunch boxes, alarm clocks, and busy school mornings, but these little traditions have a way of becoming some of the moments that are remembered most. Perhaps back-to-school shopping isn’t just about preparing children for another school year.
Possibly it’s also about celebrating how much they’ve grown—and quietly wondering how they managed to outgrow last year’s backpack so quickly. Because before long, another summer will arrive, another back-to-school shopping list will be written, and another adventure will be waiting in the school supply aisle.
Until then, happy shopping, enjoy every giggle, and may your coffee stay hot… at least until the first “Mom, can I have this?” echoes across the store.
